Recently we have had an influx of wildlife and birds brought into the clinic to check whether they need further medical treatment. Great work to the good Samaritanâs of the local community who have found them injured or in a dangerous area đ.
In regard to found wildlife and birds, when we rescue them, we could be doing more harm than good đ¤. We all do want the best for our native flora and fauna but there are a couple of things we need to be careful with before lending our aid.
During Spring and Summer, baby birds can be found everywhere đŁ. Some of the places can be local parks, sidewalks, shopping centres or even our very own backyards. A lot of the time the best thing to do is not rush into thinking the baby bird/s are in trouble or injured because they are probably just starting to learn how to fly and the parents are close-by. Baby birds that are learning to fly are called fledglings. They usually have their parents watching to teach them a valuable life lesson in survival skills such as what food to eat, how to find it and how avoid predators.
Also, during these seasons, we all know that it can be incredibly hot đ. Sometimes our local wildlife can be distressed and disorientated from the heat. These animals could be just resting and are in desperate need of a drink. A rest and a bit of water might be all they need to get back on their feet again.
Another very important thing to remember is that a lot of wildlife and birds are quite territorial. So, removing them from their home can be a lot more harmful than we think. If you are to rescue an animal or bird, please make sure you have the address of where you found them. The reason for this is that if the rescued creature is to be released again wildlife carers will want to release it back where it was found đź.
One last thing we would like to STRESS is if you have found a bat please and we mean please do not attempt to pick it up even if it is injured. Bats carry a very deadly virus called Lyssavirus and you can get this from a bite or even a scratch đą. It is best to contact the RSPCA or Department of Environment and Heritage Protection if you find one.
